William J. Gosnell Said: One of the best books for struggling Filmmakers ( Jul. 2nd 2007 )
This is by far one of the most helpful books to a no-budget filmmaker-but only if you actually build the projects in the book. There are other plans on the web to build cranes and the like, but Dan goes out of his way to make sure that you can actually find the materials he lists. I've found that obtaining the material is by far the hardest part of the process, which can feel more like a scavenger hunt than shopping. (Many materials can be found at Home depot or Lowes, but Mom and Pop hardware stores seem to be much more helpful and get into the spirit of things when making the project. (People at Home depot acted like I was a crazy when I tried to explain what a Steadi-cam or a Car mount was.....) The projects end results are sturdy, and you can feel safe attaching your expensive DV cameras to. Having equipment really expands your creative possibilities, and you can get shots you would never have thought possible on your budget.
Bookwormy Said: Great book for the fledgling filmmaker ( Nov. 30th 2006 )
I am usually put off when an author reviews his own book on Amazon. However, something told me to check out this book. Boy am I glad I did. It's filled with clever, inexpensive rigs, designed to solve all kinds of filmmaker problems and make your shoots look like they were done with very sophisticated, expensive equipment. Plus, Mr. Selakovich is helpful. He offers his e-mail address in the book. I was having trouble finding one of the parts I needed to build his "Big Combo Crane," so I e-mailed him. To my surprise, he responded with great suggestions. How many authors can you think of who offer e-mail help to people who buy their books? Mr. Selakovich also guest lectures at USC about how to build his rigs. After UCLA, this is the best film school in America. USC's endorsement says something about the quality of the equipment you can build from this book instead of spending thousands of dollars buying professional rigs. I strongly recommend "Killer Camera Rigs That You Can Build."
William R. Coughlan Said: Fantastic book... not available through Amazon ( Apr. 6th 2006 )
Since the above review may seem biased -- after all, it was written by the book's author -- he's absolutely right that this is a fantastic book for digital moviemakers. I've built several of the rigs detailed in the book, and had great success (you can see some of our results at www.tohubohuproductions.com). And alas, he's also right in that the book is not available from Amazon -- you'll have to go to www.dvcamerarigs.com to get it. I can only review the first edition (as that's what I've got), but the second edition is now in print. And it's well worth the money.
Dan Selakovich Said: An Excellent book ( Sep. 8th 2005 )
...that you can't get through Amazon. Amazon lists the 1st edition, which is out of print. But the 2nd Edition IS available at Angel Dog Entertainment. If you try to order through Amazon, they will tell you the book is out of print. IT ISN'T!!
